Aleppo airport and major roads in Syria have been closed as anti-regime rebels claim to have reached the heart of the city. Opposition fighters, led by the militant group Hayat Tahrir al Sham, launched a surprise sweep through government-held towns. Russia has promised extra military aid to Damascus to counter the rebels. The campaign is in response to increased strikes on civilians by the Russian and Syrian air forces in rebel-held Idlib.
