Joe Biden has pardoned Hunter on tax and gun charges - but how did the cases against the president's son unfold?

President Joe Biden has issued a 'full and unconditional' pardon for his son Hunter, who was convicted of firearm charges and federal tax charges. Hunter pleaded guilty to three firearm charges in June, marking the first criminal prosecution of a sitting US president's child. He then pleaded guilty to federal tax charges and was due to be sentenced later in December. The cases against Hunter stemmed from a period in his life when he struggled with drug and alcohol abuse. After several years of back-and-forth, a plea deal collapsed, and Hunter was subsequently indicted for both charges. He was found guilty of the firearm charges in June and was set to stand trial for tax evasion claims. However, he pleaded guilty to all nine counts and was facing a maximum sentence of up to 17 years in prison. Hunter was due to be sentenced in December, but President Biden issued a pardon for him, allowing him to avoid any time behind bars.
