Syrian rebels, including Islamist factions and moderates, have launched an attack on Aleppo, with support rumoured to be coming from Turkey. The rebels, led by the jihadi group Hayat Tahrir al Sham (HTS), have also entered the city of Hama and taken control of other major areas. HTS, formerly known as the Nusra Front, has around 30,000 troops and controls Idlib. The group broke ties with al Qaeda in 2016 and has been focusing on civilian government in addition to military action. The surge in fighting has raised concerns about another violent front opening in the Middle East.
