The San Francisco 49ers have claimed running back Israel Abanikanda off waivers from the New York Jets after placing Christian McCaffrey and Jordan Mason on injured reserve. Abanikanda, a fifth-round draft pick by the Jets in 2023, did not play a regular-season game for New York in 2024. The Niners were left with rookie Isaac Guerendo as the only healthy running back on their active roster. McCaffrey suffered a posterior cruciate ligament injury in his right knee, while Mason suffered a high ankle sprain in Sunday night's game against the Buffalo Bills.
