Rebel fighters in Syria have uncovered a drug factory linked to Maher al-Assad, who is accused of being involved in the captagon trade. The collapse of Bashar al-Assad's regime has revealed the extent of the illegal drug trade in the country. Islamist-led fighters have seized military bases and distribution hubs for captagon, an amphetamine-type stimulant that is widely available on the black market in the Middle East. The rebels found a large quantity of captagon pills concealed inside electrical components for export. The drug trade has been a major source of revenue for the Assad government throughout the civil war.
