Since the rebel coalition overthrew the Assad government, Syrians in Damascus have been searching for loved ones who disappeared into the black hole of torture prisons. Thousands have taken to the streets to celebrate their newfound freedom, but the country is also facing a reckoning over the horrors endured under Assad's rule. Sednaya, the notorious prison on the outskirts of Damascus, became a haunting symbol of Assad's ruthlessness, with tens of thousands of people crammed into overcrowded cells, tortured, beaten, and deprived of food and water. Many detainees were killed, and Sednaya was referred to as a 'human slaughterhouse' by Amnesty International.
