Archaeologists in Bristol, England have uncovered over 4,500 unmarked graves at the former Blackberry Hill Hospital site, shedding light on the lives and deaths of the city's poorest residents during the 19th century. The remains primarily belong to individuals who died between 1837 and the end of the 19th century, including workhouse residents and prisoners of war. The site, originally a military prison, became the Stapleton Workhouse in 1837 to house the poor and sick. Personal objects such as iron nails and coffin fittings were also found, providing further insights into the lives of the deceased. The complete findings from the excavation are due to be published in early 2026.
