The director of Kamal Adwan Hospital in northern Gaza, Dr. Hussam Abu Safiya, was detained by Israeli forces as strikes in the enclave killed nine people, including children, according to Palestinian medical officials. The hospital had been stormed by Israeli troops the day before, forcing staff and patients outside in winter weather. Israel's army denied entering or setting fire to the hospital and claimed it was conducting operations against Hamas infrastructure.
