Former US President Jimmy Carter will be honored with a national day of mourning on 9 January. President Joe Biden has ordered US flags on federal properties to be flown at half-staff for 30 days, including during the inauguration of President-elect Donald Trump. Public ceremonies will be held in Atlanta, Georgia, before Carter is buried in Plains. Biden has also directed the State Department to begin preparations for Carter's state funeral in Washington, which will include a public viewing at the US Capitol. Carter, who served as the 39th president of the United States from 1977-1981, was known for his work in championing global peace, the environment, and human rights.
