The National Archives of Australia has released over 240 cabinet papers from 2004, revealing the decisions made by then prime minister John Howard and his ministers. The papers include discussions on scaling down the presence of Australian advisers in Iraq, fears of insurgent violence, requests for assistance with a war crimes case against Saddam Hussein, concerns about the Australian Wheat Board's dealings with Iraq, and briefings on the Australian embassy bombing in Jakarta. Cabinet also discussed decision-making plans in the event of a terrorist attack involving a hijacked plane, changing marriage laws, a proposed code of conduct for grocery chains and growers, capital gains tax, the sale of Telstra shares, and security threats at the Athens Olympics. They were also aware of the international backlash to their crackdown on asylum seekers.
