ISIS's ability to inspire violence remains despite years of losses to a US-led military coalition. The extremist group has regrouped, repaired its media operations, and restarted external plotting, according to the Acting US Director for the National Counterterrorism Center. Concerns have grown about ISIS increasing its recruiting efforts and resurging in Syria, especially after the fall of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad. The UN has also reported a risk of resurgence of the group in the Middle East and increased concerns about its Afghanistan-based affiliate, ISIS-Khorasan, launching attacks outside the country. While ISIS may not gain considerable territory again, it continues to pose a danger through random acts of violence.
