Rutgers University has reached a Title VI resolution agreement with the U.S. Department of Education after failing to protect Jewish, Israeli, and pro-Palestinian students from a hostile environment following the 2023 attack that launched the war in Gaza. The agreement requires schools to review their anti-discrimination policies. The Education Department's Office of Civil Rights found that the university likely operated a hostile environment based on national origin/shared ancestry without redress. Rutgers leadership failed to evaluate reported harassment and did not take effective action in response. As part of the agreement, the school will undergo additional Title VI training, review student conduct violations, and conduct listening sessions.
