The community, which experienced significant trauma during the Holocaust, has thrived and grown in Israel, but has been slow to fully participate in civic life. The article argues that the haredi community's dependency on the state and the state's tolerance of it is a co-dependent relationship. While the haredim provide contributions to Jewish continuity and spirituality, as well as political support, the rest of Israel needs their active participation for a whole and united nation.
