Kim Philby owned up to spying for Russia - but said he would do it...

The Cambridge spy Kim Philby admitted to being a Russian agent after being confronted by his friend and MI6 officer Nicholas Elliott. Philby's confession, captured in a newly-declassified transcript, revealed that he had been working for the Soviets since the 1930s. Despite admitting to his treachery, Philby lied about breaking off contacts with the KGB in 1946. He quietly escaped to Moscow after the encounter with Elliott. Philby had been a high-ranking MI6 officer and was readmitted in 1956 after being suspected of espionage. Fresh evidence in 1963 led to his confrontation with Elliott, where he confessed his loyalty to the Soviets.
