Israel's judicial reform debate is back in the spotlight as Justice Minister Yariv Levin and Foreign Minister Gideon Sa'ar present a proposal focused on judicial selection and Basic Laws. The proposal aims to increase the Knesset's role in the judicial selection process and reduce the influence of judges. The ultimate goal is to pass various dramatic laws that have violated Israel's Basic Laws in the past, by defining them as Basic Laws themselves and making them immune to being struck down by the Supreme Court. The reform bill has not yet been introduced due to the ultra-Orthodox political parties insisting on passing a law enshrining the exemption of ultra-Orthodox communities from military service.
