Obesity may pose a serious health concern for children diagnosed with cancer, according to a recent study. Researchers found that obese children with cancer have a higher risk of dying compared to those who are not obese. The study analyzed data from over 11,000 children with cancer and found that obesity at the time of diagnosis was linked to a 16% increase in the risk of relapse and a 29% increase in the risk of death. The negative impact of obesity on prognosis was especially pronounced in patients with acute lymphoblastic leukemia and brain tumors. The findings highlight the need to address childhood obesity to improve cancer outcomes.
