Israeli government approves Gaza ceasefire deal

Israel's cabinet has approved a Gaza ceasefire and hostage release deal, ending the 15-month war with Hamas. The ceasefire is set to begin on Sunday and would halt fighting and bombardment in Gaza. It would also enable the release of hostages held in the territory since Hamas's attack on Israel in 2023. The deal was approved by Israel's security cabinet and supported by Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's office. The truce is set to take effect on the eve of the inauguration of Donald Trump, who claimed credit for working with outgoing US President Joe Biden's team to seal the deal.
