Archaeologists in East England discovered a rare ancient Roman burial site, including a 1,500-year-old stone coffin, during highway upgrades along the A47. The sarcophagus was part of a small Roman roadside cemetery that had remained undisturbed since its burial in Roman times. The coffin was ornately carved from stone quarried from over 30 miles away and featured a gypsum burial, indicating high status. Other graves nearby contained glass and ceramic drinking vessels, as well as valuable items laid at the feet of the bodies. Specialists will analyze the artifacts to gain insight into construction methods and health conditions of the era.
