The World Health Organization (WHO) has reported a suspected outbreak of Marburg Virus Disease (MVD) in Tanzania, with eight deaths out of nine reported cases. The WHO has assessed the risk of the virus spreading in the region as high due to its strategic location as a transit hub. Marburg is a highly contagious virus similar to Ebola, with fatality rates up to 90%. The virus is often transmitted by fruit bats, which are considered the natural reservoir. Health authorities are identifying and monitoring contacts of the infected individuals to contain the outbreak.
