The ancient Maya city of Ichkabal in Quintana Roo, Mexico, has opened to the public, becoming the 194th pre-Columbian archaeological site open to visitors in the country. The opening is expected to generate economic and social development for local communities while preserving Maya heritage. The completion of a Prior Occupation Agreement between the National Institute of Anthropology and History (INAH) and the Ichkabal Ejidal Commission allowed for the opening of the site. Ichkabal is known for its triadic sets of structures, reflecting Maya architecture from the Preclassic Period. The site was officially registered in 1996 and has undergone restoration and conservation efforts by INAH.
