Netanyahu says Israel retains 'right to return to combat' if ceasefire negotiations do not progress

Israel retains the 'right' to resume fighting if negotiations with Hamas over the implementation of a ceasefire do not progress, according to Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. The long-sought Gaza ceasefire agreement between Israel and Hamas is expected to take effect today. US President Joe Biden and president-elect Donald Trump have given full backing to Israel's right to return to combat if negotiations are futile. The ceasefire will come into effect from today at 6.30am UK time after being approved by the Israeli cabinet on Friday night. The deal will see the release of 33 of the 98 hostages over the course of six weeks.
