A panel commissioned by the Belgian government has concluded that the Belgian railway company that sent Jews to Nazi death camps should not have to pay compensation to survivors. The report recommended an official apology to survivors and expanded Holocaust education and commemoration initiatives, but stopped short of recommending reparations. One member of the commission, a child of Holocaust survivors, strongly disagreed with the report's conclusions. The World Jewish Restitution Organization expressed disappointment with the decision and urged Belgium to compensate survivors urgently while they are still alive.
