President Donald Trump has implemented sweeping changes in the first days of his second administration, including firing career agency employees, freezing federal grant funds, and halting diversity, equity, and inclusion programs. At least 240 employees have been fired or reassigned, and thousands more could be affected. Trump has fired at least 17 inspectors general across the federal government and fired more than a dozen employees at the Justice Department who worked on criminal prosecutions of Trump. The National Security Council has sent home 160 career government employees for a staffing review, and many senior career diplomats have left their jobs at the State Department. Trump has also directed a pause on most U.S. foreign assistance disbursed through the State Department, leading to layoffs in aid organizations. Additionally, Trump has moved to end affirmative action in federal contracting and put federal diversity, equity, and inclusion staff on paid leave. The administration has also paused federal grants and loans and fired the acting chair of the National Labor Relations Board.
