A mural depicting Italian Auschwitz survivors that was defaced and erased has been preserved by Rome's Shoah Museum. The mural, created by artist aleXsandro Palombo, shows Holocaust survivors Liliana Segre and Sami Modiano in blue-and-grey striped clothes with gold stars of David. The vandals covered the survivors' faces and the yellow stars with white paint but left the tattooed serial numbers on their arms. The mural now stands in Rome's Jewish ghetto and is seen as a symbol of resistance against antisemitism.
