Mayo Clinic is using big data and AI to share its expertise globally and improve healthcare outcomes. The clinic is creating a distributed data network that allows solution developers to use de-identified clinical data from millions of patients to train AI models and build new healthcare solutions. Mayo has almost 50 petabytes of patient data, including electronic health records, clinical notes, radiology images, and pathology slides. The clinic has already developed algorithms that can detect conditions like low ejection fraction and has saved hundreds of lives. Mayo is also exploring the use of AI for administrative purposes and sees a future where advanced AI tools handle complex tasks like identifying patterns in pathology slides.
