A surge in aid to the Gaza Strip is expected to alleviate the acute food emergency affecting children in the war-torn region, but the long-term health consequences of malnutrition could persist for years. According to UN estimates, over 60,000 children in Gaza will require treatment for acute malnutrition in 2025. Studies have shown that severe malnutrition in childhood can lead to cognitive and physical impairments, as well as an increased risk of cardiovascular disease and type 2 diabetes later in life. Around 131 million children, including nearly 40 million under the age of 5, live in areas experiencing acute food crises globally.
