Jimmy Carter was eulogized for his good deeds and spirituality at his state funeral. Overlooked in the tributes was his critical role in preventing the demolition of the mausoleum of Hassidic master Rebbe Nachman of Breslov in Uman, Ukraine. Local authorities planned to raze the neighborhood built atop the historic cemetery, but Rabbi Michael Dorfman coordinated a campaign of diplomatic pressure on Soviet authorities to save the site. With the help of Rabbi Pinchas Teitz, who had previously organized an event for Carter during his presidential campaign, the matter was settled and the mausoleum was saved.
