Retired general picked to head Israeli military

Retired general Eyal Zamir has been appointed as the next chief of staff of the Israeli military, following the resignation of current chief Herzi Halevi. Zamir, who served in the Israeli military for 28 years, will be taking over a military that has been involved in conflicts in Gaza, Lebanon, and Syria. He previously served as the deputy chief of staff and headed the southern command. Halevi congratulated Zamir and committed to a professional transfer of command. Netanyahu's government has faced criticism for a security failure that resulted in a deadly attack on southern Israeli communities.
