Using LiDAR technology, researchers have uncovered the ancient fortified city of Guiengola in southern Mexico. The Zapotec city, built in the 1400s, was previously believed to be a military outpost. The discovery challenges long-held beliefs and provides insights into pre-Columbian Zapotec life. LiDAR technology allowed archaeologists to scan the terrain from the air and reveal the complete layout of Guiengola, including temples, ball courts, elite residences, and defensive structures. The findings show that Guiengola was a fortified and expanding city with a clearly organized urban layout and social hierarchies.
