Hundreds of Syrians drop asylum bids in Cyprus since Assad's fall,...

Hundreds of Syrians who sought refuge in Cyprus have withdrawn asylum applications since the fall of Bashar al-Assad, according to Cypriot officials. From December 9, 2024, to January 31, 2025, 1,367 Syrians expressed an intention to return to Syria, with 944 individuals rescinding their asylum applications. The decrease in asylum seekers is attributed to a decrease in numbers over the past two years and the closing of a loophole used by migrants from sub-Saharan Africa.
