A man has been given a suspended prison sentence for leaving an abusive voicemail for MP Naz Shah. Thomas Mearing pleaded guilty to a public communications offence and was sentenced to 12 weeks in prison suspended for 18 months. He was also given a five-year restraining order. The voicemail accused Shah of supporting Hamas and contained derogatory comments. Shah described the abuse as completely unacceptable and called for MPs and their staff to be able to carry out their roles without fear of violence or intimidation.
