The European Commission has approved the sale of ultraviolet-treated mealworm powder as a novel food within the European Union. French company Nutri'Earth has been granted exclusive rights to market the product for the next five years. The decision comes after the European Food Safety Authority concluded that the UV-treated mealworm larva powder is safe for consumption. Despite opposition within the European Parliament, the objection to the decision was rejected. The mealworm powder will be incorporated into various food products and labeling will be required to inform consumers of its presence and potential allergic reactions.
