January 2025 was the third hottest month on record globally, with temperatures 1.75°C higher than pre-industrial levels. The cooling influence of La Niña conditions had limited impact on curbing global heat, which has seen 18 of the last 19 months with temperatures at least 1.5 degrees Celsius above pre-industrial levels. Europe experienced the second warmest January on record, while the Arctic saw its lowest sea ice extent for the month. The persistent global heat is primarily attributed to the accumulation of greenhouse gases from burning fossil fuels.
