Muhsin Hendricks, the world's first openly gay imam, was shot and killed in South Africa in a possible hate crime. Hendricks, who founded the Inner Circle, a safe haven for gay Muslims, was ambushed while traveling near Gqeberha. The Cape Town Ulama Board condemned the murder but stated that their views do not align with the deceased. The International Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Trans and Intersex Association (ILGA) believes the killing may be a hate crime.
