Investigative journalist David Collier claims that the 13-year-old narrator, Abdullah al-Yazouri, is related to a senior Hamas official. Collier also points out that al-Yazouri appeared in a Channel 4 documentary in 2023 under a different name, alongside a man identified as his father who is linked to an anti-Israel NGO. The BBC defended the documentary, stating that it was produced in line with their editorial guidelines and gave viewers a rare glimpse into the lives of children in Gaza during the war.
