Scientists have identified the oldest tree in Europe, a small common juniper in Finnish Lapland that is 1,647 years old, surpassing previous records by over four centuries. The age was determined using dendrochronology techniques, studying growth rings, and it was estimated that the juniper sprouted in 378 CE. The trunk of the juniper measures less than 10 centimeters in diameter, challenging previous assumptions about longevity in woody plants. The common juniper has withstood extreme conditions throughout its life, serving as a living example of species adaptation.
