Researchers have successfully recovered DNA from sediment at a Cantabrian site, providing new insights into life during the Ice Age on the Iberian Peninsula. The genetic material was compared with that of the Red Lady and samples from other sites, revealing the presence of animal species not previously found at the site. The study supports the hypothesis that the Iberian Peninsula served as a climatic refuge during the Ice Age. Prehistoric leopards from the El Mirón cave were found to be more closely related to those in the Caucasus than in Central Europe.
