Climate change is forcing more Bangladeshis to emigrate to the Gulf in search of a better life, but they often face abuse and exploitation in slave-like conditions, according to a new study. The survey found that nearly all Bangladeshi migrants faced at least one form of exploitation in their new lives, such as employer abuse, sexual assault, or wage denial. Migration has increased in the past two decades as climate change robs people of a safe life and stable income. Families in disaster-prone regions are now more likely to move within Bangladesh or abroad, with up to 88% of households sending someone abroad in the past decade.
