Germany's likely next chancellor Friedrich Merz has invited Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to visit Germany and has vowed to find a way for him to do so without being arrested under an International Criminal Court warrant. Merz expressed his belief that it is absurd for an Israeli Prime Minister to be unable to visit Germany. The ICC has issued arrest warrants for Netanyahu and his former defence minister for alleged war crimes committed in Gaza. Germany, as a signatory of the founding treaty of the court, is required to arrest its suspects on their territory. However, Germany also has a strong tradition of support for international justice for war crimes.
