Light rail fares in Jerusalem and Tel Aviv have increased by 3.3% from NIS 6 to NIS 8 in order to finance a moderation in the planned hike in public transport fares. The increase was initially scheduled for July 2024, but the delay resulted in NIS 60 million less in state revenue. As part of the budget agreement, bus fares will also increase by 33.3% and discounts will be provided to designated populations. Public transport in Israel is heavily subsidized, with passengers paying only 15% of the trip cost.
