Southern ocean winds may prevent AMOC collapse, according to Nature study

A new study published in Nature suggests that the Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation (AMOC) is unlikely to fully collapse this century, despite weakening due to climate change. The study found that the AMOC's resilience is due to persistent upwelling in the Southern Ocean, driven by strong westerly winds. However, a weaker AMOC could still have significant impacts on global climate, including disruption to weather patterns, rising sea levels, and effects on ocean ecosystems. Weakening of the AMOC could also lead to changes in global rainfall patterns, impacting crop yields and increasing droughts in regions like the Mediterranean.
