Scientists warn that Alexandria, an ancient city in Egypt, is sinking into the sea due to rising sea levels. The city is experiencing a surge in building collapses, with 280 buildings destroyed by coastal erosion in the last 20 years. The rate of collapses has increased from one per year to 40 per year. Rising seas and intensifying storms, fueled by climate change, are undoing in decades what took millennia of human ingenuity to create, according to lead author Sara Fouad. The researchers suggest possible solutions, including building sand dunes, elevating buildings, or relocating people in vulnerable areas.
