Syria's foreign minister has vowed to rid the country of chemical weapons remaining after the downfall of the Assad regime, appealing to the international community for help. Syria joined the Organisation for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW) in 2013 and destroyed 1,300 metric tons of chemical weapons and precursors. However, investigations have concluded that the Syrian government under Assad used sarin and chlorine barrel bombs in attacks during the civil war. Syria is now seeking technical assistance, logistical assistance, capacity building, resources, and expertise from the international community to dismantle the remaining chemical weapons.
