Ethiopia's ancient instrument, the begena, is experiencing a resurgence among the country's artistic community. The instrument, once reserved for the elite, was banned during the Marxist Derg regime. However, it is now being used for therapy in nursing homes and hospitals, with patients experiencing a calming effect. Students are also learning to play the begena again, and its popularity is growing. The instrument's music has traditionally accompanied the prayers and meditations of the Ethiopian Tewahedo Church.
