Geraldine Brooks, wife of Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist Tony Horwitz, recounts the sudden death of her husband and the long process of grieving in her new book, Memorial Days. After three years of busyness and suppressing her grief, Brooks travels to the remote island of Flinders to finally allow herself to fully experience her loss. It is there that she is able to let out a howl and find some healing. While Brooks doesn't believe in an afterlife, she shares strange occurrences that suggest her husband could be watching over her. These include a cousin's vision of Tony on a cliff surrounded by yellow and red flowers and the appearance of tulips in her garden that she never planted.
