Australian police have charged 14 members of an organised crime ring for carrying out attacks disguised as religiously motivated hate crimes. The incidents targeted Jewish neighbourhoods in Sydney, including vandalizing synagogues and firebombing buildings. However, police now believe that the attacks were not driven by anti-Semitic ideology but were instead an attempt by criminals to gain favor and divert police resources. The discovery of explosives in an abandoned caravan, initially thought to be part of a terror plot, was revealed to be a 'criminal con job'. Police suspect the same individuals were behind both the anti-Semitic attacks and the caravan hoax.
