The Knesset Constitution Committee has begun voting on a revised version of a bill to alter the makeup of the committee responsible for electing judges in Israel. The new proposal includes replacing two representatives of the Israel Bar Association with two lawyers appointed by the coalition and the opposition. It also reverts the majority necessary for high court appointments back to 5-4. Critics argue that increasing political involvement in the judicial selection process will negatively affect the court's independence.
