Archaeologists in Lübeck, Germany have discovered the remains of a 12th-century Romanesque basilica under St. Mary's Church, providing insight into the church's early history. The findings confirm previous assumptions about the church's construction and highlight the economic success of Lübeck's merchants at the time. The basilica, which symbolized the city's economic upswing, became a model for other churches in the Baltic Sea region. St. Mary's Church suffered heavy damage during a bombing raid in 1942 and has been remodeled multiple times since then.
