A Columbia University student disputes the government's claim that bedbugs forced his transfer to a Louisiana detention center. The student, Mahmoud Khalil, stated in a court declaration that he did not hear anyone mention bedbugs during his time at a detention center in New Jersey. Khalil's lawyers are asking for his release on bail and for a judge to prevent the government from arresting and detaining noncitizens engaged in constitutionally protected expressive activity. The lawyers argue that Khalil's transfer to Louisiana was predetermined and carried out for improper motives.
