A new study from experts at the Koret School of Veterinary Medicine at Hebrew University found that dogs with chronic kidney disease (CKD) may benefit from treatment with paricalcitol, a type of vitamin D. The study showed that dogs given paricalcitol had a significant reduction in parathyroid hormone (PTH) levels, improving mineral balance. Dogs taking a placebo had worsening protein levels. The study suggests that paricalcitol could be a promising treatment for managing CKD in dogs, but careful monitoring is necessary to avoid adverse effects.
